ReadWorks
(readworks.org) is a free online reading resource that offers
comprehension resources to support reading instruction. It offers a wide range of nonfiction texts
and activities as well assessments to support teachers strengthen literacy
skills using various high quality passages and activities for differentiated
reading instructions. Upon exploration of this website, I found that it is easy
to navigate and to implement and used as a supplement to improve reading
instruction.
What makes this online resource a great learning tool is
how it supports readers at different skill levels, especially struggling
readers. The differentiated passages
help students develop their background knowledge as well as their vocabulary
skills. Many of the passages offer an
audio option for those who prefer audio text or struggles with written text.
This website is easy for students to navigate and very
student friendly. The passages that are provided can supplement and support
lessons from different content areas. There are three ways these passages can
be used in the classroom which includes: digitally, by print, or projected onto
a board or smart board. Some of the activities include graphic organizers and
worksheets for responses and critical analysis.
Readworks help teachers by offering quality passages that
promotes literacy. The features
available to teachers make it easier for teachers to monitor student progress
and give feedback to students. This is
an excellent website that is thoughtfully designed to provide quality reading
instruction that help build better readers.
