International Reading Association Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #6

Storyline Online, an award-winning children’s literacy website, is a program of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists or SAG-AFTRA. It relies on donation and grants to produce all its videos. This website offers virtual read aloud experience as children watch videos read by actors and actresses. Storyline Online is available and free to users, which also includes supplemental curriculum by elementary school teachers aiming to strengthen comprehension, as well as verbal and written skills for children.
Storyline Online offers a variety of books from grades Kindergarten to third grade. Each book has an accompanying lesson plan and activities integrating ELA with other content subjects as well. Each supplemental teacher guide includes a synopsis, theme, lesson plans, standards, objectives, and activities to enhance student learning. The great thing about the curriculum provided is that the activities extend to other subjects such as Math, Science, Social Studies, and Art. The resources are also free and can be printed for future use.
As I was exploring the website further, I found the resources to be very useful and beneficial for teachers, parents, caregivers, and children. I like how the graphics are animated and not just still pictures from the book. There were some books that I saw, which I definitely can use in the classroom to promote literacy and extend to other subjects. Overall, I think Storyline Online is an effective literacy website providing curriculum teacher guides and videos of actors and actresses doing read aloud to improve reading, writing and communication skills, and logical thinking, as well as serves as an inspiration for a lifelong love of reading.
