IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #3

IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #3

Storynory is a website that offers free audio stories geared toward children ages 7-11, but also offers some nursery rhymes and stories for younger readers. Stories can be downloaded as podcasts for children to listen to later. The stories can also be read on the website, so children can track the words with their finger and follow along while listening to the podcasts.
Many of the original stories on the site are written by its founder, Hugh Fraser, and read by professional actors. The website also offers seasonal stories, which will be great for lessons on different holidays or for children who simply enjoy those types of stories. Other stories include fairytales, myths, and even original poems and music. The site has also begun to produce more content related to history and interviews to simulate curiosity about the world and promote critical thinking.
Storynory is great for teachers because they can easily download stories to share with their students. Some stories even include jigsaws to solve and comprehension questions to answer at the end. By listening and reading new stories every week, students will expand their vocabulary, their imagination, and even the way they see the world. Writing competitions are also held through the website, in which children can submit their own stories, and the winning stories are read on Storynory. This is a fun way to encourage students to practice writing and use their imagination and creativity to create one-of-a-kind stories.
With this website, children can be exposed to more stories and be encouraged to read more books. They may also be encouraged to write and participate in competitions to showcase their own work. Activities provided for different stories will keep the children engaged and interested in what they are reading, and parents and teachers will have access to free podcasts that their children can listen to anytime.
