IRA Newsletter #3

ICDL book logo   International Children's Digital Library

International Children’s Digital Library - ICSDL (http://en.childrenslibrary.org/) is a collection of children's books from around the world in dozens of languages. According to the website, the mission of the ICDL Foundation is to help children appreciate diverse cultures, languages and ideas through literature. I came across this website by chance as I was exploring different online resources that promote literacy.
This website allows children and families to have access to books published in their native country or first native tongue. This allows parents or elders to pass on books or stories to their  children so they can grow up with the knowledge of their family’s heritage and language regardless of where they live.  This website also allows children to learn and value other cultures and languages through literacy.
In addition, the ICDL support children to become effective members of the global community.  It teaches children have respect to diverse cultures and languages by allowing the best children’s literature available online free of charge.
ICDL’s goal is to build a collection of books that represent every culture and language throughout the world.  Having these collections of books available through technology promotes sharing of knowledge and  the appreciation of literacy from the world community.
