IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #6

ReadWriteThink is a free online resource that contains lessons, activities, and printable worksheets to help students improve their reading and writing skills. The site caters to students from pre-k through 12th grade and offers interactive games that students will find enjoyable, as well as resources for teachers and parents that can be used with their children in and out of the classroom.

Teachers can access lesson plans and activities that they can bring into the classroom. The site is well-organized, making it easy to find activities that address different standards. Teachers can search for games and activities appropriate for students of all ages. Some interactive activities include ABC Match, in which students can practice letter-recognition fluency, and Book Cover Creator, where students can create new covers for books that they read or covers for books they will write on their own. Included in the site is a section for printouts, where teachers can find graphic organizers, writing starters, assessment tools, and informational sheets. The site also includes a section for professional development, offering strategy guides and online seminars for teachers to take advantage of.

Parents can use this ReadWriteThink at home to engage their children in reading and writing and have them continue practicing what they already learned in school. The site includes a parent and after-school resource section, which contains fun and educational material that parents can access for free, such as activities projects, games, printouts and podcasts. This section also offers tips and how-to’s for parents to learn how to do different activities. Some examples include How to Act Out a Story and Engaging the Five Senses to Learn About Our World.

Overall, this is a great website for teachers, parents, and students! It has so much to offer, from interactive games and lesson plans to use in the classroom to tips and resources for parents to use at home. I think students will find the games and activities engaging and fun, and educators will definitely make use of all the amazing resources available.
