StoryJumper (www.storyjumper.com) is a tool that allows children to create and publish their own illustrated stories online for free. The user-friendly tool gives children a template to create their own short story children’s book. The books may be created individually or in groups. StoryJumper can also be used with a wide age range. Younger children can use the preset props made available and will need more hands-on guidance when creating stories, while older children can construct a more advanced story using the StoryStarter found on the website.
The simple interface lets children illustrate one page using a drag-and-drop graphics system while adding text on the page. There are lots of customization options that children can choose from while creating their stories. Children can create their own characters, select backgrounds, select font and type text/story, as well as add images to enhance the story. There are also a variety of backgrounds or environment to fit the setting of the story. When completed, there is an option to publish the story as viewable to the public, as private, or viewable to friends and family. There is also an option to purchase a hardcover for $24.95 or to purchase digitally which can be accessed through the app on any device.
Overall, StoryJumper is an awesome and effective tool to use in the classroom or at home because of its easy-to-use storytelling tool giving students the opportunity to create their own books, gain confidence in their writing, collaborate with others, and share their work on the web. It offers fun and engaging ways for children to express themselves through storytelling or creative writing bringing reading, writing, and imagination together.
