IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #4

Whooo’s Reading (https://www.whooosreading.org/) is a is a free and excellent reading resource website that helps students to think more critically about books they read.  Instead of assessing student’s understanding of they have  read through multiple choices, Whooo’s Reading offers assessments for quizzes that are open  ended ,  helping student’s to be critical thinkers.
This is an excellent reading resource that can help teachers monitor their student’s reading progress.  There are no pre loaded e-books so students will have to enter their own books (books they’re reading).  Teachers will be able to monitor how students are answering their quizzes as well as the quality of their writing to see their thinking process.  One of the great things about this website is that it allows teachers to send feedback to students and also award them for the work they do.
This website is a great companion to an existing reading program.  It can help motivate readers to read by having them read books of their choice but I won’t rely on it as a useful assessment since the quiz are not perfectly aligned with any particular curriculum.  What I would suggest is that teachers use this website promote literacy by having student’s read book of their choice ( this is good for differentiating) and gain insights of what students are interested in, the progress in reading how their writings or responses are developing.
Whooo’s Reading is a platform that is good for upper elementary and middle school.  It definitely supports and fosters passionate reading.  The questions asked may be general but it allows students to thoughtfully reflect on what they read.  This is an effective supporter of literacy due to its focus on open-ended, in-depth questions.
