IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #7

For my effective literacy website #7, I've chosen to explore ABCya (https://www.abcya.com) which is a free website that provides educational games, videos, and activities for elementary students. All of the content is free, though teachers can pay for a subscription to use an ad-free version. Games are also available on mobile devices with the subscription. Some of the games may require a parent or teacher to read brief instructions, but most -- even for kids in younger grades -- are self-explanatory. Skills the site works on include thinking and reasoning, academic Relevance, reading and tech skills. As a whole, the content is categorized in a number of different ways and is easy to browse and search for a specific type, challenge, or topic to practice.  The site is structured around the Common Core Curriculum and so the games can be chosen by grade level and then by a general category such as letters, numbers, strategy, skill, or holiday.
Overall, I think that this is a great teaching tool. I like that it offers a broad range of games that covers a variety of subject areas. The numeracy and literacy games, in particular, are well focused and educationally relevant while also being more fun for children than textbook exercises and worksheets. I’ve tried using site in my own classroom and my students love it! Some of the games they enjoy playing are “Out of Sight Words” and “Monster Mansion – Letter Match”. I love that there are options for students to be creative as well when on this website. Students can use story maker to create stories or use tangrams to create pictures. ABCya is fun way to practice new concepts. Kids will be having fun and not even realizing they are learning!
